Chapter 4
David studied Bobbie from afar. Her white cowboy hat hiding her face, she sat behind the wheel of her blue Ford F350, letting the engine idle. If things were different, he couldâve been driving that truck. He liked trucks. She shouldnât be here, parked outside the corral where he, his daed, and his brothers trained horses, just yards from the saddle shop where Daed and Tobias were working at this very moment.
David fought the urge to race across the uneven, weed-infested ground to the truck, jerk open the door, and demand she say whatever she came to say. The early December wind whipped at his jacket and cooled his burning face. He ripped his gaze from the truck and forced himself to watch Diego, silent, unsmiling, walk the creamy tan buckskin with his flowing black mane and tail. Nice, even pace. The boy had the touch. He was meant to be on a horse, but he was no joyous jumping jack today. He hadnât been since his grandmotherâs death.
Concentrate on Diego. He needs you.
Let her drive away. Let reason prevail.
Nee. Let her come to me.
Did she like trouble? Did she seek it out? No, she had walked away from trouble a year and a half earlier. So what was she doing here? Heâd seen her twice since the auction, both times in town, both times over a quick cup of coffee, both times he said no more and both times she agreed. No matter how painfully obvious their feelings were that day at the auction when sheâd stood there in that ridiculous out-of-season sundress talking to Jacob King. Her feelings were plain as the sun in summer. He and Bobbie had come full circle. She gave him up without a fight once. Her presence now, in this place, said she couldnât do it again.
She should leave. She was fishing off someone elseâs dock, thatâs what she was doing. He couldnât blame her. Likely his doubts had been plain as lightning on a stormy, rain-drenched night.
He didnât dare make it easy for her. He would stay right here, boots cemented to the hard earth. She would have to decide. Stay or go.
She rolled down the window, stuck her hand out, and made a come-here motion.
He cringed.
âWho is it?â Diego lifted his free hand to his eyes, squinting against the sun. âLady want you?â
In all things, Bobbie was a lady. And she definitely wanted David. âI have to go see what she wants. Why donât you go for that ride?â
Diego shrugged. His usual ebullience over riding had disappeared in light of the grim reality that he had no living relatives in the world besides Lupe. His experiences traveling between El Salvador and the United States had taught him to trust no one and to be uncertain about how long anyone would be around for him. A sad state of affairs for an eight-year-old. David opened the gate. The horse ambled through, his rider silent and morose.
âSee you back here. Donât go too far.
